Heavy-duty cattle guard details
This heavy-duty cattle guard is engineered to the U-54 load-carrying rating of 25 tons per axle. It's used for heavier equipment than the DOT highway-required 16 tons per axle and is the longest of the U-54 cattle guards at 14'. They may be laid end-to-end if a larger distance across the road is needed. These crossings are available with precast foundations, hinged clean-out sections, and wings.
Overbuilt for highway use, these cattle grids are built for heavy-duty equipment and are typically used in oil fields and logging operations. Providing access through fence lines without the need for a gate is a must with some frequent traffic operations that use oversized and overweight vehicles.

Cattle Guard Top Rail Design

Cattle Crossings in Action
The U-54 load rating carries 25 tons per axle and is used when the load-carrying capacity exceeds what's required by the DOT for public road projects.

The flat top rail design allows cars to cross at higher speeds and much more smoothly than with the traditional round top rail design.

One of the most tedious and expensive portions of the cattle grid installation is the foundation. To pour your own requires making your forms and having the cement delivered to the job site. Not only is it expensive, but it's a scheduling issue as well. We can deliver the precast concrete footings that are simply set in place and anchored to the steel in the field. It's as convenient as it gets!

Attaching the fence line to the cattle guard
A cattle crossing is only as effective as the connection to the fence line it's going to protect. If a single post is used where it terminates at the grid, cows could simply step around the end and bypass the steel grid altogether. The wing is a triangular section of steel that is powder-coated to match and provides a physical barrier to walking around. The post section accepts the fencing, and the wing spreads that impede the ends of the width of the grid at ground level, keeping your livestock contained. Below is a picture of an attached wing.
