Nursery Heating for Piglets

The Stanfield Heat Mat 3x4 is a must-have solution for keeping piglets warm and comfortable as they transition from farrowing to the nursery stage. Unlike farrowing heat pads, which feature a split design, the nursery pad heats the entire surface, allowing piglets to move freely, play, and rest wherever they choose while staying warm. This large, durable heating pad is designed to serve up to 24 piglets at a time, providing uniform warmth and improving their growth and overall health.

Product Features

  • Size: 3 x 4 ft. (0.91 x 1.22 m)
  • Animals Served: Up to 24
  • Power Output: 275 watts
  • Voltage: 120 VAC
  • Energy Usage: 6.60 kWh/day
  • Temperature: Maintains 20-25°F above ambient air
  • Power Cord: 10 ft. (3 m)

Benefits

  • Uniform Heat Distribution: Provides consistent warmth across the entire pad surface, maintaining a comfortable environment for piglets.
  • Energy Efficiency: Reduces barn heating costs while delivering targeted warmth directly to the animals.
  • Safe and Durable Construction: Made from a flame-resistant, fiberglass-reinforced composite material that is water-resistant, easy to clean, and capable of withstanding heavy use.
  • Improved Animal Health: Ensures energy is focused on growth rather than fighting off the chill, reducing stress, and promoting well-being.
  • Non-Slip Surface: The textured tread design provides a sure footing for active piglets.

Installation & Anchoring

To maximize safety and lifespan, the heat mat should be securely anchored to the floor, wall, or draft barrier. Pre-drilled and dimpled holes make it easy to use Osborne Smart-Fasteners or simple tie-downs for secure installation. For solid concrete surfaces, use expansion bushings and screws. Applying a bead of caulk around the edges can further protect the mat from moisture and debris buildup.

Usage Tips

  • Air Temperature: The heat pad provides a warm resting area but does not heat the entire barn. Maintaining an ambient air temperature of at least 60°F (15°C) prevents chilling and ensures optimal performance.
  • Piglet Behavior: Monitor piglets to ensure the heat pad temperature is appropriate. If they avoid the pad or lay on its edges, adjustments may be necessary to either the barn’s temperature or the mat’s power control settings.
  • Avoid Covering: Do not place bedding or other materials on the heat pad, as this reduces efficiency and may cause overheating.

Temperature Control

The mat is designed to provide a steady temperature increase above ambient air without the need for an internal thermostat. For more precise control, consider using Osborne Heat Pad Controllers, which offer reliable and economical temperature management.
