Bulk Feeding for Grow-Finish Hogs

The Osborne RO45 Big Wheel hog feeder holds approximately 2,400 pounds of feed at the stated feed density and serves up to 90 grow-finish pigs. Its circular trough gives pigs access around the feeder, while the animal-operated feed wheel releases feed as they eat.

This feeder suits pigs from approximately 50 pounds through market weight. Its reinforced fiberglass hopper and trough, together with corrosion-resistant metal components, are designed for indoor or outdoor feeding.

The lid is optional and is not included in Barn World's base feeder offering. Select the appropriate lid separately for your setup. Skids and other accessories are also optional.

How the Big Wheel Feed System Works

Pigs move the paddle wheel inside the trough as they eat. That movement operates the feed-delivery mechanism and brings feed into the eating area. When wheel movement stops, mechanical delivery stops, helping limit feed accumulating in the trough.

The moving sweep and round trough help keep feed circulating through the eating area rather than collecting in corners. This design is intended to reduce waste compared with uncontrolled feed flow. It does not guarantee zero waste, eliminate every plugging problem or replace regular feeder checks.

Optional Lids and Outdoor Use

Choose the lid that suits your filling method and feeder location. The available designs include galvanized steel and a fiberglass-reinforced composite lid with a filling hatch. Confirm the selected accessory when requesting your quote.

A suitable lid helps protect stored feed, but the feeder still needs routine inspection after wet weather. Check feed condition, trough cleanliness and wheel operation. Follow the operating instructions when setting up or adjusting the feed mechanism.

Choosing Capacity and Planning Refills

A bulk hopper reduces the frequency of carrying feed to individual pans. Refill intervals depend on the number and size of pigs, feed consumption and your management routine. Check remaining feed regularly rather than estimating availability from hopper size alone.

For greater storage, compare the 105-bushel hog feeder. The capacity reference below shows the feeder range and accessory arrangements.

Optional Skids for Feeder Placement

The galvanized steel skid assembly supports the feeder beneath its fiberglass base and provides a way to reposition it as directed by the manufacturer. Plan the move around the feeder's weight, ground conditions and suitable handling equipment.

There isn't a way to completely shut off the feed when there is feed still in the feeder. If the cone is lowered down, it will cut down on the amount of feed released to the trough. The cone can be lowered while spinning the wheel by hand to let feed out so the cone can be lowered to its lowest position. Hope this helps!
