Cattle handling and working equipment
Self-Catch Operation for Cattle Handling
The Powder River S1500 is a self-catching cattle headgate designed as a practical option for livestock handling systems. It uses simple adjustments and a 31.5-inch release opening. The self-catch design can support single-person operation when the headgate is correctly installed, adjusted and used as part of a suitable working system.
This product is the headgate, not a complete squeeze chute. It can attach to compatible Powder River panels or be adapted to an existing alleyway. Check the mounting arrangement and surrounding handling equipment before choosing it as a replacement or adding it to a new setup.
How the Self-Catching Headgate Works
The self-catching mechanism helps capture the animal as it enters a correctly prepared headgate. The operator still needs to set and adjust the equipment, manage cattle movement and control release. Self-catching does not mean the handling process is unattended or entirely hands-free.
A headgate controls the head and neck area; it does not provide the body restraint of a complete squeeze chute. Consider the restraint and access required for the work being performed, along with the animals' size and behavior, when planning the rest of the system.

Planning Your Alley or Chute Installation
Check how the headgate will connect to the existing working system and allow room for the operator to reach the controls. Review the approach alley and release area so animals can move through the system without obstructions. A compatible connection and suitable support are as important as the headgate dimensions.
Before using a new installation, inspect the mounting points and moving components, make the appropriate adjustments and become familiar with the catch and release operation. Continue checking the mechanism and connections during routine maintenance.
Choosing the Right Headgate
Compare the S1500 with your handling needs rather than choosing solely by price or the self-catch feature. Animal size, temperament, the surrounding equipment and the work being performed all affect suitability. Contact Barn World with your current setup and livestock requirements if you need help comparing options.
