We have a gate that uses two hanger bolts. The top bolt is facing down and my wife believes it should face up to help hold the weight of the fence. Can you please email a definitive response to put an end to this marital fuss?

It is done that way so no body can take the gate off , if both are facing up you can just lift the gate off and get in.

What is the diameter of the rod that holds the gate on? Also, is the item 12 inches long, i.e. is it long enough to go through a standard railroad tie (about 7-8 inches wide).

The rod is 3/4". The threads are 12" long.
