Cattle Guard Description

These cattle guards are 8' long (across the road) by 6' or 8' deep (in the direction of travel) and are available with optional wings. They may also include removable or integral boxes, as shown in the pictures below. If you need a different length, see all of our round-top rail cattle guards here.

The wings allow you to tie your fencing directly to the cattle grid to prevent your livestock from 'sneaking around' the ends. The integral box is welded to the entire perimeter to help keep dirt from creeping in underneath and into the vaulted area when installed directly on the ground.

Grid Specifications

  • Top Rail in 3.5" outside diameter
  • Approximate gap between rail walls is 3.11"
  • Gray enamel finish
  • Top rail ends are sealed with 12-gauge steel

Cattle guard options

Cattle crossings can be designed for many different uses and come with optional wings and steel skirts for a variety of uses. Take a look at the descriptions and pictures below to choose what is best for your site. If you're looking for a high-speed traffic solution, take a look at the flat top rail guards, and if you have any questions or if we can help with your project, please let us know.

Boxed Cattle Guard - no foundation!

The box-style cattle guard is the round top rail grid with a steel skirt welded around the perimeter (see picture below). This design allows it to lie directly on the ground and helps prevent dirt from creeping in underneath. It is very useful in non-traditional installations that don't warrant a foundation and may be set directly on the ground without a concrete footing.

While not needing a traditional concrete foundation, some customers will bury railroad ties in the ground to anchor the grid and prevent movement. A bed of crushed gravel underneath the installation is also highly recommended to help prevent water drainage erosion from degrading the surrounding area. A flat ground surface is also required to prevent the guard from walking away from its original position.

Low Traffic and Remote Area Use

This feature is especially popular in low-traffic areas such as cell phone towers and lonely pumping stations that don't see that many visitors. Simply set it on the ground, push dirt up against it to build a vehicle ramp, and once tied to your fencing, you'll have an effective livestock barrier without pouring any cement.

Construction Site Uses

The boxed guards are also very popular at construction sites as equipment wash racks or 'rumble strips' to get vehicles clean before entering a public roadway. Contractors also like to use them to preserve job-site entrances and access points from being torn up and turned into a muddy mess by heavy equipment. They can also be considered 'portable' since they are not tied to any footings and may be moved by simply lifting them out of place and taking them to the next job.

Removable Box Cattle Guard

This feature allows you to physically remove the entire cattle guard without disturbing its surrounding installation. This is especially useful in areas that collect a lot of debris that can find its way to the open area underneath. Removing the grate makes cleaning it out much easier.

Here is a picture of the side of the cattle guard inside the 'removable box' frame. The holes in the cattle guard accept the upright wings as shown in the pictures below.

Cattle Guard Wings

The wings are necessary to connect your fence line to the cattle guard. It transitions the upright fencing to the horizontal grid to ensure your cows don't just step around a fence post connecting the two. The steel triangles have a vertical post to make a direct connection to fencing and provide a secure transition to your pasture perimeter.

The integral box is designed to allow a cattle guards to be set directly on or in the ground and prevents the surrounding dirt from creeping in underneath the guard. These types of guards are usually installed in temporary or low traffic areas like private driveways. They are also very popular as construction wash-outs.

The wings provide a barrier so the livestock aren't able to walk around the end of the fence line where it joins the guards.
