Pig Scales for Small Livestock: Choosing the Right Portable Scale

Getting an accurate weight from a pig is harder than putting the pig on a scale. The animal moves, backs up, turns around, and sometimes decides that standing still is not part of the plan.

That is why a good pig scale does more than measure weight. It gives the animal a defined space, provides secure footing, and gives the person doing the weighing a practical way to get the animal in and out.

Barn World's current portable animal scales are designed for pigs, sheep, goats, calves, and other smaller livestock. The available configurations include a narrow 14-inch platform and a wider 20-inch platform, both with a 500-pound weighing capacity.

Why a Pig Scale Needs More Than a Platform

A basic floor scale can tell you how much something weighs, but weighing a live pig presents a different problem.

The animal has to remain on the weighing area long enough for the indicator to produce a useful reading. Side rails and gates help define the space and keep the animal from stepping off the platform while it is being weighed.

A contained scale can also make the process easier on the person handling the animal. Instead of trying to keep a pig centered on an open platform, you have a defined area for loading, weighing, and unloading.

Keep the Weigh-In Moving

One of the useful features of the current Barn World portable scales is the gate arrangement. Animals can enter through the front and exit through the other end, depending on the selected configuration.

That matters when several animals need to be weighed. You do not want to turn every pig around on the scale before sending it back into the pen.

Side-opening gates are available, and center-opening configurations can also be requested on applicable models.

14-Inch or 20-Inch Platform?

The choice between the two current portable animal scales is largely about the size of the animal and how much room you want inside the scale.

Feature 14-Inch Platform 20-Inch Platform
Platform width 14 inches 20 inches
Overall width 18 inches 24 inches
Overall length 60 inches 60 inches
Capacity 500 pounds 500 pounds
Best suited for Pigs, sheep, goats, calves, and smaller animals Pigs, sheep, goats, and other livestock needing more room
Wheel kit Available Available

The 14-inch portable animal scale has an 18-inch overall width and is designed for smaller livestock. The 20-inch portable animal scale has a 24-inch overall width and gives larger pigs and other small livestock more room inside the weighing area.

When the Wider Scale Makes Sense

A wider platform is not necessarily about a higher weight capacity. Both current models are rated for 500 pounds.

The difference is the space available to the animal.

A larger hog may be within the weight limit but still be uncomfortable in a narrow basket. If the animal is constantly touching the sides or struggling to turn, the wider configuration may make the weighing process easier to manage.

The wider model has a 20-inch platform inside a 24-inch overall frame. That additional six inches of interior width compared with the narrow model can make a noticeable difference when weighing larger pigs.

What the Wheel Kit Is Really For

A wheel kit is more useful than it might sound.

Livestock are not always standing where the scale happens to be. If you have multiple pens, barns, or weighing areas, moving the animals to one permanent scale can become part of the work you were trying to simplify.

The wheel kit allows the portable scale to be moved to another location. That can mean taking the scale to a pen instead of moving a group of animals across the property.

It also gives you the option of storing the scale out of the way when you are finished weighing.

Digital Display or Electronic Meter?

The current portable scales offer different readout options.

A basic digital display provides a straightforward way to see the animal's weight. The higher-performance electronic meter adds additional capabilities, including an RS-232 connection for transferring weight information to a computer or other compatible equipment.

For someone weighing a few pigs for routine growth checks, a simple display may be all that is needed. An operation keeping detailed electronic records may have more use for the advanced meter.

Readout Consider It When
Digital display You mainly need an easy-to-read weight at the scale
Electronic meter You want additional data and computer connectivity

A Calm Animal Gives You a Better Weigh-In

The scale cannot control the animal, but the design of the weighing area can make the job easier.

Solid footing is important. So is giving the animal enough room to stand without constantly bumping into the sides.

Move animals through the scale in a familiar, controlled manner. Avoid chasing a pig into the weighing area at full speed. Once the animal is inside, give it a moment to settle before relying on the displayed weight.

If you are weighing several animals, use the same general procedure each time. Consistency makes it easier to compare the numbers from one weighing session to the next.

What Can You Weigh on a Pig Scale?

Despite the name, these portable scales are not limited to pigs.

The current Barn World models are designed for smaller livestock such as pigs, sheep, goats, and calves, with a 500-pound capacity. They can also be useful in 4-H, livestock-show, veterinary, and small-farm applications where animals need to be weighed individually.

The important limitation is the capacity and physical size of the scale. A 500-pound portable animal scale is not a substitute for a heavy-duty cattle weighing system.

When You Need a Cattle Scale Instead

Once animals get beyond the size and capacity of a portable small-livestock scale, a different weighing system is needed.

Barn World's livestock scales include systems that use weigh bars under chutes and platforms, along with larger cattle weighing equipment.

For example, the current cattle scale package combines an indicator and data collector with heavy-duty load bars rated for up to 11,000 pounds.

That type of system is designed around a very different job from weighing a 200- or 400-pound hog on a portable basket scale.

Portable Scale or Chute Scale?

There are two common ways to approach livestock weighing on a working farm.

System Where It Fits
Portable animal scale Individual pigs, sheep, goats, calves, and other smaller livestock
Chute weigh bars Cattle already being worked through a squeeze chute
Heavy-duty cattle scale Larger animals and higher-capacity weighing applications

If your cattle already pass through a chute for vaccinations, sorting, pregnancy work, or other handling, weigh bars can turn that existing setup into a weighing station without requiring a separate portable basket scale.

Before Buying a Pig Scale

A few simple questions can narrow down the right configuration:

  • What is the largest animal you expect to weigh?
  • Will you primarily weigh pigs, or several types of small livestock?
  • Is a 14-inch platform wide enough for the animals?
  • Would a 20-inch platform make loading easier?
  • Do you need wheels to move the scale between pens?
  • Do you want a simple digital display or electronic data capabilities?
  • Will the scale be used indoors, outdoors, or both?
  • Do you need side-opening or center-opening gates?

The answers are more useful than simply shopping by the word "pig scale." The scale needs to fit both the animal and the way you actually work.

Make Weighing Part of the Routine

Regular weighing becomes much easier when the equipment is easy to move, easy to load, and appropriate for the animals being measured.

For pigs, sheep, goats, and smaller calves, a portable scale can provide a practical way to keep weight records without building a permanent weighing station. The narrow and wide Barn World models both provide 500-pound capacity, while the choice of platform width, gates, wheels, and readout lets you configure the scale around the job.

Barn World's livestock scales range from portable animal scales for smaller livestock to weigh-bar and cattle-scale systems for larger animals. If you know what animals you need to weigh and their approximate size, Barn World can help you compare the available configurations and provide a shipping quote.
